Frequently Asked Questions
What are the adhesive patches and pods?
The adhesive patch attaches to your skin. The pod is the small device that clicks into the adhesive patch. Together, they form what is called the sensor in the following.
What does each sensor measure?
Each sensor collects different signals. The head sensor measures oxygen saturation, brain activity, eye movements, and muscle activity in your jaw. The chest sensor measures heart rate, breathing, body movements, and snoring. The flow sensor measures your breathing through the nose. The leg sensor measures leg movements during sleep.
Where do I place each sensor?
Please watch the instruction video and/or read the blue instruction manual for details.
Why is shaving necessary before applying the sensors?
Shaving helps the adhesive patches stick better to your skin, which improves the quality of the signal being measured.
Do I need to shave fine hair on the skin?
You only need to shave areas with thicker types of hair like legs, chest hair and beard. Women do not need to shave their face, chest or abdomen.
Can I wear pyjamas or a nightgown over the sensors?
Yes, you can wear pajamas or a nightgown. Just make sure they are not tight-fitting.
Why should I clean my skin before applying the adhesive patches?
During the day, your skin produces oil, which can make it harder for the adhesive patches to stick. Cleaning your skin right before applying the patches helps them stay in place overnight.
How do I clean the skin?
Wash the area with soap and water, then dry it thoroughly. Make sure no soap residue remains. After that, use the provided wipes to clean the skin again, and wait until the skin is completely dry before applying the patches. This helps the sensors stay in place and ensures good data quality.
Should I take my sleep medication?
Your doctor should advise you whether you should take your sleep medication. Please note on the questionnaire which sleep medication you took.
What can I do if I sweat a lot?
Heavy sweating can affect how well the patches stay on and may impact the measurement of the signals. To reduce sweating, keep your bedroom cool, wear light and loose fitting sleepwear, and avoid alcohol or spicy food in the evening. Make sure your skin is clean and dry before applying the patches — this helps them stay in place so the system can record reliable data.
Can I sleep on my stomach during the sleep study?
If it’s comfortable for you, you may sleep on your stomach. However, sleeping on your back or side is usually better for keeping the sensors in place and ensuring accurate results. If you start on your back or side and naturally roll onto your stomach, that’s okay — just try to avoid positions that press directly on the sensors.
The light on the pod is blinking orange. What should I do?
Check that the adhesive patch is firmly attached to your skin and that the pod is clicked into place. If the light does not turn green, leave the sensor on your skin, it may still record the data successfully. For the forehead pod push all four corners firmly into the patch to make sure it is well connected.
The light on the pod does not turn on. What should I do?
Check that the adhesive patch is attached properly and that the pod is fully clicked into the patch. If the light does not turn green, leave the sensor in place and report what happened in the questionnaire.
The light on the pod stays orange. What should I do?
Make sure the adhesive patch is attached to the skin and the pod is clicked into the patch. If the light remains orange, leave the sensor on and and report what happened in the questionnaire.
I applied a patch too high, low, or crooked. What should I do?
Leave the patch where it is and click the pod into place. Do not remove or reposition the patch—it may not stick well afterward and can affect your sleep study.
Part of the head patch is stuck on my hair. What should I do?
Do not worry, the data may still be recorded properly. Do not try to reposition the patch. Just firmly click the pod into the patch and continue.
I removed a patch and reapplied it. What should I do?
Once removed, the patch does not stick as well. Press it down firmly and indicate in the questionnaire which sensor was reapplied.
I forgot to shave the skin before applying a sensor. What should I do?
Hair can prevent good adhesion. Do not remove the adhesive patch. Press the patch firmly to your skin and note in the questionnaire which sensor area was not shaved.
I forgot to clean my skin before applying a sensor. What should I do?
If the skin is not clean, the patch may not stick well. Do not remove the adhesive patch. Press the patch down firmly and report in the questionnaire which sensor was affected.
Do I need to do anything to start the sleep study?
No,as soon as you place the adhesive patch on your skin and click in the pod the sleep study begins. The pod's light will turn green.
The nasal cannula doesn’t stay in place. What can I do?
You can secure the nasal cannula by using medical tape or a regular band-aid. Tape it to your cheeks diagonally, just under the nostrils
Can I get out of bed during the night?
Yes, Onera STS is wireless, so you can move around freely.
Can I listen to music with headphones during the night?
If the headphones do not touch the head sensor it is safe to wear them.
An adhesive patch came loose. What should I do?
Try to reattach the adhesive patch to your skin. If needed, use a small piece of medical tape or a band-aid. Report on the questionnaire which sensor came off.
A pod detached from the patch. What should I do?
Try to firmly click the pod back onto the adhesive patch. If the green light comes back on, the sensor is working again. If you cannot reconnect it, set the pod aside and report the affected sensor in the questionnaire.
Water or liquid got on a sensor. What should I do?
Gently dry the sensor with a clean cloth. Mention in the questionnaire which sensor got wet.
When should I remove the sensors?
Remove the sensors when you are finished sleeping—unless you experience skin irritation. In that case, remove the adhesive patch and pod right away and contact your physician.
How do I remove the sensors?
Leave the pod and patch connected. Gently peel them off your skin. Do not clean the sensors . Stick them onto the return sheet provided in the kit.
My skin is red where a sensor was placed. What should I do?
Mild redness is common where the adhesive patch was placed. If redness remains after 24 hours, please contact your physician.
Where do I put the sensors after removing them?
Stick the patches (with pods still connected) on the return sheet and place everything in the return box.
Should I clean the sensors before returning them?
No, do not clean the patches or pods. Leave them connected and place them on the return sheet.
What should I return?
Return all materials and the filled questionnaire.
When should I return the kit?
Please return the sensors the same day you complete your sleep study.
How do I package the kit for return?
Stick the adhesive patches (with pods still connected) onto the return sheet. Return all materials and the filled questionnaire. Seal the box with the closing seal and attach the return label. Then drop it off.
What happens after I return the kit?
Once we receive your kit, we will analyze the recorded sleep data and send the results to your physician. Your physician will then contact you to discuss the findings and any recommended next steps.
How long does it take to get my results?
After we receive your returned kit, the data is analyzed and sent to your physician within a few working days. Your physician will then contact you to discuss the results. In most cases, you’ll hear back within one to two weeks after returning the kit.
