Frequently Asked Questions

What are 'patch', 'pod' and 'sensor' of the Onera system?

The patch is the plaster that you stick on the skin. The pod is the recording box that you click onto the patch. The sensor is the combination of patch and pod together.

What do the sensors measure?

The main sensor records brain activity, eye movements the muscle activity of your jaw. The chest sensor records heart activity, breathing, how your body moves while you sleep and the sounds you may make in your sleep, such as snoring. The flow sensor records breathing through your nose. The leg sensor records your leg movements while you sleep.

Where should I place the sensors?

You stick the main sensor on your forehead, the chest sensor on your chest, the flow sensor on your abdomen and the leg sensor on your lower right leg. Look for detailed instructions in the manual or video instruction.

Why should I shave?

Shaving is necessary to make the patches stick better to your skin.

Why do I have to clean my skin just before applying the sensors?

During the day, the skin produces sebum, which can make your skin feel greasy. The patches stick to the skin better if you clean your skin just before applying the patches.

Can I wear pajamas or nightgown over the sensors?

This is not a problem. Just make sure the pajamas or nightshirt is not tight-fitting. This is to prevent the sensors from becoming loose during the night.

The indicator light on one of the sensors flashes orange. What should I do?

Check that the patch is properly attached to your skin and that the pod is properly clicked onto the patch. If the light does not turn green, leave the sensor on the skin and indicate in the questionnaire which sensor(s) are involved.

The indicator light on one of the sensors does not come on. What should I do?

Check that the patch is properly attached to your skin and that the pod is properly connected to the patch. If the light does not turn green, leave the sensor on the skin and indicate in the questionnaire which sensor(s) are involved.

The indicator light on one of the sensors is on solid orange. What should I do?

Check that the patch is properly attached to your skin and that the pod is properly connected to the patch. If the light does not turn green, leave the sensor on the skin and indicate in the questionnaire which sensor(s) are involved.

I stuck one of the patches too high/low/ crooked/ upside down. What should I do?

Leave the patch in place and click the pod onto the patch. Under no circumstances remove the patch to re-adhere it! This is likely to loosen the patch during the night and render the measurement unusable.

I partially stuck the head patch on my hair. What should I do?

Check that the patch sticks properly where the electrodes touch the skin. Under no circumstances remove the patch to reapply it! This is likely to loosen the patch during the night and render the measurement unusable. Leave the patch in place and click the pod onto the patch. Probably the measurement is still (partially) usable.

I accidentally touched the sticky back of one of the patches. What should I do?

The adhesive strength of this piece of patch may be reduced. Press the patch extra well on your skin. Indicate in the questionnaire at which sensor you accidentally touched the back.

I removed the patch and reapplied it. What should I do?

The stickiness of the patch is reduced. Press the patch on your skin extra well. Indicate in the questionnaire which sensor you re-applied.

I forgot to shave the skin under the sensors. What should I do?

The patch does not stick to the skin as well when hair is still present. Press the patch extra well on your skin. Indicate in the questionnaire at which sensor you did not shave the skin.

I forgot to clean the skin under the sensors. What should I do?

The patch does not stick to the skin as well when it is not cleaned. Press the patch extra well on your skin. Indicate in the questionnaire at which sensor you did not clean the skin.

Do I need to do anything to start the recordings?

No, once you stick the patch on your skin and click the pod in, the measurement starts and the indicator light on the front of the pod turns green.

The nasal cannula is not staying properly in my nose. What can I do?

You can tape the nasal cannula in place with a piece of medical tape or a regular band-aid. It is best to tape the cannula to your cheeks, diagonally under the left and right nostrils.

Can I get out of bed at night, for example to go to the toilet?

Yes, that's no problem. Onera STS I is a wireless system that allows you to move freely.

One of the patches has come off (partially). What should I do?

See if you can stick the patch back on your skin. If necessary, use some medical tape or a band-aid to attach the patch. Indicate in the questionnaire at which sensor the patch came off (partially).

One of the pods has come off the patch. What should I do?

See if you can click the pod back onto the patch. If all is well, the green light will come back on to indicate that the measurement has restarted. If you cannot place the pod back on the patch, set the pod aside. Indicate in the questionnaire at which sensor the pod came off.

The cannula has come loose from my nose. What should I do?

Tape the nasal cannula in place with a piece of medical tape or a plain band-aid. It is best to tape the cannula to your cheeks, diagonally under the left and right nostrils.

Water or liquid accidentally got on the sensor. What should I do?

Dab the sensor with a dry cloth. Indicate in the questionnaire which sensor got water or liquid on it.

When may I remove the sensors?

Remove the sensors the next morning unless you experience skin irritation. In that case, remove the patch and pod immediately and contact your doctor.

How do I remove the sensors?

Leave the patches and pods connected to each other. Carefully remove them from your skin. DO NOT clean the patches or pods. Adhere the patches (along with the pods) to the attached return sheet.

My skin is red where the sensors have been. What should I do?

Redness may occur because of the adhesion. Consult your doctor if the redness has not disappeared after 24 hours.

Where do I leave the sensors after removing them?

Stick the patches (with the pods still clicked in) on the return sheet. Place it all in the return package.

Should I clean the sensors before returning them?

No, do NOT clean the patches and pods before returning them. Leave the patches and pods connected to each other and stick them on the return sheet.

What should I return?

Return only the patches and pods. Stick them on the return sheet. Remember to fill in bedtime and wake-up times on the return sheet. Dispose of the manuals, cannula and other packaging material (except the box!) in the appropriate trash. Also make sure not to throw away the return label and seal! In addition, do not forget to complete the questionnaire.

When should I return the sensors?

Return the sensors immediately the same day you conducted the sleep study.

How do I package the sensors?

Stick the patches (with the pods still clipped in) on the attached return sheet. Place it all in the return box. (This is the same packaging that was sent to you.) Stick the return label on the box. Seal the box tightly with the closing seal. Deliver the package.

What happens after I return the sensors?

Your sleep recordings are analyzed and go to your treating physician. Your doctor will discuss with you the results of the sleep study and treatment options.
